31.  What does the Bible teach about the Doctrine of Faith?

Wow, next to the doctrines of God and Christ, perhaps also salvation you have one of
the most major of major doctrines of the Bible.  And recall that even when we look at
other major doctrines like faith, Christ, and salvation we are looking at manifestations of
the character and personality of Christ.  For example when we say that God is obligated
to "forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness"--like the Word of
God says, it is really another manifestation of the character of God Who desires to
forgive sins if the confessions are made and made in the proper manner; of course
always through Christ Who is presently at the right hand of God making intercession for
our sins. And even now, with an introduction to the doctrine of faith, we have made a
few fundamental statements on faith as presented in the Bible as the Word of God; and
if you look in a good concordance for faith you will find the word dominate in the Bible
just like God, Christ, and salvation.
There is so much to say about "faith" in the Bible, so this is a prime subject of the Bible,
that this answer will have to be somewhat limited; and if you are a serious student of the
Bible or desire to become one, you should look up the word "faith" in an exhaustive
Concordance like
YOUNG'S ANALYTICAL, and then read the interesting verses listed
there.  You will also find several Hebrews and Greek words used that are translated into
English as "faith", and YOUNG'S will give you the fine points of differences.  If you are
not satisfied you can back it up with a good book on word studies like VINCENTS.  Also I
would suggest for further study several books available on this website from
SunGrist_Bible such as SOME SOUNDS OF SOUND FAITH, which lists and discusses
from the Bible 10 major doctrines of the Bible, one of which is faith; or if you are
interesting in some of the applications of faith such as "faith contending" and evidences
and apologetics in faith, you may wish to order and read volume 2 of the LEARN
CHRIST commentaries with its chapter on this subjects in the process of commenting on
the five books of the Apostle John.
Still it is necessary in order to answer the Bible question to, from the Bible, back certain
fundamental statements about faith.

1.  The faith of Christ and the Bible, that faith from the God of the Universe and the Lord
of Creation, was "once for all delivered to the saints" (the book of Jude) in the first
Century; and while there has been a great amount of evolution in theology just as in
American Thought, the progressive revelations of the Bible ceased with the writing of
the 66 books in spite of all these Pentecostals, who enamored with the pride that "the
Bible came to them only" or "came out of them" {an attitude Paul condemns in I and II
Corinthians}, try to treat themselves as Apostles or Prophets qualified to give new
revelations such as when they say
"God told me" or "God gave me a message".  They confuse Revelation which was the
writing of the Word of God by Apostles and Prophets, complete in the first century, with
illumination, which is the help of the Holy Spirit in the understanding of those revelations
which must happen every day.

"to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints"  (Jude
3b)

2.  The basic definition of faith as given in the Bible is found in Hebrews 11:1.

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
(Hebrews 11:1)

All that believers "hope for"--and the Bible word here is much  stronger than what we
mean when we say "well, I hope so", as it is more in the category of "this is what we
reasonable expect to happen" based on the clear teachings of the Bible and because of
our faith in the Bible and in the God Who wrote it in the first place.  The Bible itself deals
with "evidence" even as faith also deals with the evidence of the Bible for it.  You have
no more faith problems if you have come to have faith in the Bible as the Word of God.
Just read what it says on hope of salvation in this life and for the next, and believe it;
however if you need more on Christian Evidences and Apologetics as they have been
developed through the centuries then read such good books as THE WONDER OF THE
WORD by McClenndon Day, or the CHRISTIAN VIEW OF SCIENCE AND SCRIPTURE by
Bernard Ramm, or C.S. Lewis from literature, or Linton and Simon Green leaf from law;
and if you are of a scientific background either R. A. Millikan, the Nobel prize winning
physicist who proved a discrete particle called the electron and wrote EVOLUTION IN
SCIENCE AND RELIGION, or even Mosma's THE EVIDENCE OF GOD IN AN
EXPANDING UNIVERSE; and the list goes on and on, but once you get into one of them
they will lead you to others.  {By the way a lot of these references are given in volume 2
of the LEARN CHRIST commentaries, or email at
sungrist@aol.com for a more
exhaustive list.}

3.   Faith comes to you as with any other individual by hearing or reading these words of
God in the Bible.

"Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God".  (Romans 10:17)

Throughout the OT times God spoke through Prophets with Reports to present faith to
unbelievers, and in the NT times God spoke through Apostles like Paul, and of course
also through His Son Jesus.  While these Apostles and Prophets, like we do today,
lamented that all who heard would not believe these Reports, we are encouraged by the
realities that a "remnant"of Jews and Gentiles do believe.  {By the way a new series of
pages have been started on this website to achieve a
fifth goal of SunGrist_Bible:  to
with the Holy Spirit present these Bible Reports to the unbelievers.}

4.  Most of the Jews during the time of Christ, of course Paul and Jesus were both Jews,
refused to accept salvation by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and what He did on the
cross for the salvation of the world.  Paul says they were ignorant of God's way of
righteousness by faith; and like today, they having this ignorance went their own way to
establish their own righteousness by works instead of by faith.

"Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved.  For
I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.  For
they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own
righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God."  (Romans 10:1-3)

You know if you have the spiritual maturity for "meat" I would suggest the reading
through of the book of Romans.  You might want to even underline those verses with
the word "faith" and study them.  If you do not have a study Bible good for marking in,
please order the
Nelson Slimline.

5.  What is being said here, also based on the Word of God and the character of God,
is that salvation--now and in the future---is all of the mercy and grace of God without a
tinge of the works of man.

"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the
gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast."  (Ephesians 2:8,9)

I could go on and on, but I refer you to your Bibles.  "They will shed a lot of light on the
commentaries", especially now that you know where to look!

32.  The Bible on Doctrine?

This will be a short introduction to a page on the website called
"A Page on Doctrine."
Doctrine and teaching are words used interchangeably in the Bible; and while some
churches and denominations through the years have evolved a system of theology and
doctrine that is extra-biblical, sometimes consistent with the Bible and sometimes not; for
those who have come to accept the obvious doctrine of the Bible as the Word of God
that can be read and understood by all creatures of the God the Father who wrote
it--that is, the claim that the Bible itself makes to be words and Word from God in many
phrases like "thus spake the word of the LORD" or "thus saith the LORD", it is really
quite blasphemous to claim that any man or organization can speak with the same level
of authority as God Himself.  It is also quite limiting to the power of God to communicate
to His own creatures, to maintain the stance of pride that God does not preserve high
fidelity in biblical communications.  Of course the truth or doctrine does not flow out of
the book when it is opened, it has to be read or listened to; and faith in doctrine like
faith in God, Christ, and the Bible--these are also major doctrines of the Bible--is
self-defined in the Bible as "Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God."
You know it is sort like a good serve, overhead, or volley in tennis, if you don't try it you
will never really know!

33.  Truth for Men and Women in the Bible.

We read it in Genesis, the very first book of the Bible, about the same time that God
made His universe and His creatures including man and women; and yet like on God on
marriage, we never seem to get it.  God created generic "man" of male and female, both
in His own image, and when it say "He crated him, male and female He created them", it
also introduces you to the Bible custom at the very beginning that all the "he" and "him"
message are meant for that generic man of male and female.  Granted a few times in
the Bible on the specifics of marriage as for example given in the book of Ephesians,
there are directed instructions toward the male and female, most often ignored in the
current evolution of American Thought, the American Democratic Faith, and the
American Conscience.  However, it is no different on God's rules and patterns for
marriage as compared to other Bible doctrine, where what God says and desires for our
lives is ignored in favor of what we want to do.  Marriage is for one man and one woman
for life, according to God from Genesis to Ephesians and on, but we "will not endure
sound doctrine", heaping up for ourselves itching ears Bible teachers who will tell us
what we desire; and most generally that is far from the unchanging teachings of the
Word of God in Ephesians.  Perhaps you would like to check Paul's Statement of Faith
and Practice for Christians and church members as given in Ephesians
