A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
(I Corinthians 14)

NOTE:  To prophesy is to preach or give testimony in
public worship.  The word connection to Prophet is
obvious.  What is less obvious is that most of the
Prophets message was for his own generation, then and
now, with the same message for us today; and less than
10 percent was predictive.  Of course there are some that
spiritualize everything including “After six days they went
up to Jerusalem”, taking a verse and going everywhere
preaching not authorized by the Bible text, and making a
private interpretation as Peter condemned in I Peter 1:
20,21.

“Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather
that ye may prophesy.”

{I Corinthians 14 on the positive side was given more to
promote preaching and public testimony in the language
of the audience or listening worshippers.  Preaching in
the language {tongue} of the hearers is more important
than the prophet proving his own spirituality or special
gift, and like the chapter before, the famous I Corinthians
13 chapter on love has already shown “the more excellent
way” of love as the motivation over any evidence of a gift.
Preaching in a known language is given priority over
other gifts; however according to the background of I
Corinthians 12 and 13, those preachers and evangelist of
the gift of unknown tongues or tongues period are not to
lord it over the other gifts, like for the mouth telling the
foot “I don't need you” or “you are less than me in the
kingdom”; and never, never according to the context and
spirit of I Corinthians 12-14 should anyone make other
Christians and church members feel there is something
missing in their Christian lives if they don't mumble an
unknown tongue, called below “speaking in the air”.  The
subject of I Corinthians 12 is how the Spirit of God
manifests Himself among different church members in
different ways; and oh my, the wrong done to others,
especially youth when they are made to feel ashamed
because their gift and talent is other than unknown
tongues.}

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not
unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him;
howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

{Unknown tongues are not for speaking to other men, nor
to encourage them to do the same in public:  unknown
tongues are to be addressed to God in private
devotionals.}

Some desire to speak to the total church yet use the
wrong language!

"But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to
edification, and exhortation, and comfort.  He that
speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he
that prophesieth edifieth the church."

NOTE:  While public preaching and testimonies are
dictated by this Word Of God to have the purpose in
public worship to build up the individual, to exhort them
in the Bible like I Corinthians 12-14, and to give them
comfort rather than shame, there is not way a loose self-
gratifying statement like “be baptized in the Spirit with
evidence of such in unknown tongue speaking” meets
any of these 3 criterion for proper worship and
preaching.  It is a gimmick for popularity.

Chapter Switch from Unknown to Known Languages

“I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye
prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that
speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the
church may receive edifying. {If you are speaking to a
Portugese congregation. It being a known language,
there should be an interpreter.}

NOTE:  The preacher down the street in the small church,
not on TV or radio, is greater than the preacher using
unknown tongues.

'Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues,
what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either
by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by
doctrine?'

NOTE:  Only the apostles like Paul and the Prophets
spoke by revelation.  Any other can only speak dreams of
special revelation, more a practice of the false prophets,
priests, pastors, and people of the book of Jeremiah.

Unknown Tongues are Trumpets of Uncertain Sounds,
Blowing Air

"And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe
or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how
shall it be known what is piped or harped?  For if the
trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare
himself to the battle?  So likewise ye, except ye utter by
the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be
known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air."

NOTE:  It is amazing that some so beautiful in the
distinction, harmony, and melody of song can be so
jarring as they mumble into the air.  They often use “Holy
Ghost” over the more respectful Holy Spirit, because
superstition and awe of the unknown is also one of their
gimmicks.

“There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the
world, and none of them is without signification.
Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall
be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that
speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me."

NOTE:  You will find several critical words about
unknown tongue speakers in this chapter:  like above
with “barbarian”, later acting like children, then
ignorance, and also bad Bible hermeneutics that sounds
like the Bible came to them only or out of them.  Why
then do so many accept it?  Simply because like in
Jeremiah the “people” like the preachers are Falling
Away, a few moments of ectasey proves to themselves
otherwise, and it is part of the false message of optimism
for the future of the world and church.

"Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual
gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the
church."
{ If you desire to excel or get enthusiastic about
any one spiritual gift, then let it be in the direction of
church edification, or building up, not the tearing down
with some unique.}

Pray like You Sing, with Understanding

“Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue
pray that he may nterpret.
For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but
my understanding is unfruitful.
What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray
with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit,
and I will sing with the understanding also.  Else when
thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that
occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy
giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou
sayest?  For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other
is not edified."

Be Grown Men and Women

“ I thank my God, I speak with tongues {Paul spoke many
languages and even used an unknown tongue in private
when caught up to the third heaven} more than ye all: Yet
in the church I had rather speak five words with my
understanding, that by my voice I might teach others
also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in
malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.”

Be Kind to Unbelieving Listeners

“In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and
other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that
will they not hear me, saith the Lord
{the OT predicted
the Word spoken in many known languages like on the
day of Pentecost as thousands from all over the Roman
world heard the message in their native tongue.}

Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that
believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying
serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which
believe.  If therefore the whole church be come together
into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there
come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they
not say that ye are mad?  But if all prophesy, and there
come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is
convinced of all, he is judged of al: And thus are the
secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down
on his face he will worship
God, and report that God is in you of a truth.”

There is time for Peace and Quiet in Church Worship

“How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every
one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue,
hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be
done unto edifying. If any man speak in an unknown
tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that
by course; and let one interpret. But if there be no
interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him
speak to himself, and to God. Let the prophets speak two
or three, and let the other judge.  If any thing be revealed
to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.”

NOTE:  At least these mumblers into the air have become
somewhat sensitive to Bible in this chapter as they some
times wait for an interpretation; however in the spirit and
understanding of them and the passage above, we the
third prophets JUDGE that there is not necessarily a
direct connection between what is said in the unknown
tongue and the interpretation since they always sound
the same.

The Human spirit Influenced by the Spirit must be under
Self-Control

“For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn,
and all may be comforted.
And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the
prophets. For God is not the author of confusion, but of
peace, as in all churches of the saints. Let your women
keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto
them to speak; but they are commanded to be under
obedience, as also saith the law.  And if they will learn
any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a
shame for women to speak in the church.”

NOTE:  In all real churches of the saints, God is the
author not of confusion but of Peace and reverence with
quiet in Worship.

Warning against Bad church attitudes and Bad Preacher
Hermeneutics

“What? came the word of God out from you? or came it
unto you only?  If any man think himself to be a prophet,
or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I
write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.  But if
any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant. Wherefore,
brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with
tongues. Let all things be done decently and in order.”
